Canal Advisory Committee Meeting

When: Tuesday, October 10, 6:30 pm
Location: East Bay High School

Hi,

I haven't been reporting lately because the Canal Advisory Committee has been awaiting work by the consultant. Things are on-schedule.

There is a meeting Tuesday October 10th at East Bay High School, 6:30 PM. You may have seen the signs already at Apollo Beach entrances.

The purpose is to display the results of the study so far. All canal areas of the county have been surveyed for depth (bathymetrics) and you will see detailed maps on display, color coded so shallow areas are very apparent. Tentative dredging details are shown.

There will be a general update by County Public Works, but mostly the format will be walk-up discussions with people manning the map displays for each area like Apollo Beach. I'll be there as well as county and consultant (PBS&J) personnel.

If you can't quite make 6:30, come anyway.

Brian Rayle
Canal Advisory Committee representative for Apollo Beach

Symphony Isles Residents:    Below is a forwarded message from the President of ABWIG, a local grass roots group dedicated to getting our canals dredged. The net-net after attending the County meeting this week is that if we in Apollo Beach want the County to notice us, we must get involved and let our voices be heard.     The County is conducting a survey that is available on-line at:    www.hillsborough.wateratlas.usf.edu/news/  (After clicking on the link click on "Past News and Events" to get to the survey.)
PLEASE take the time to print this survey out and mail it to the address provided on the website or fax it to: 272-5320. The survey is lengthy and you needn't complete the whole thing if you do not wish to. The most important elements are name/address and the last page asking for description as to where you are most concerned about silting problems on our waterways. These descriptions should be as concise as you can make them (i.e., main channel from Marker 2 west of Andalusia all the way to Symphony Isles Beach). You are allowed to list 3 trouble spots.
REMEMBER: WE ARE COMPETING WITH THE REST OF HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY FOR OUR COMMISSIONERS ATTENTION AND FUNDING. THE MORE THEY HEAR FROM OUR LITTLE PART OF PARADISE, THE BETTER CHANCE WE HAVE OF GETTING OUR CANALS FIXED WITH ABWIGS HELP.    Please take the time to fill out and send the survey ASAP. I believe they said they would accept these surveys only through next week. This is important to all of our property values and boating use.

Thanks,

Your Communication and Enhancement Committee

From ABWIG:
The meeting went well. Nearly 300 showed up, the majority from Apollo Beach of course. The focus was on completing a survey and marking a map by placing push pins into a map. While I did not count, it was solid "pins on top of pins" for the outlet area to the bay on the south side of Apollo Beach. Masters Canal (the canal that passes by the Golf clubhouse and has been fed by the county ditches along Miller Mac) was also solid with pins, as was an area east of the Fairway bridge that crosses the Flamingo canal. Another 10 or so areas also received pins. The county will do a careful analysis. If you could not make it you can still fill out the survey and mail it in. There is a place you can descriptively fill out troublesome navigation locations. Where it asks about county construction that may have contributed I mentioned years of erosion in the Miller Mac ditches.  After clicking on the link click on "Past News and Events" to get to the survey. http://www.hillsborough.wateratlas.usf.edu/
While it is separate from county activity, Stephanie Flatt took the opportunity to update us on her progress (on behalf of  ABWIG)  toward obtaining permits and so on for the dredging of the arterials to the bay. My understanding is that the permits are in order and will soon be submitted. She asked the county for matching funds.
As usual, my email list is partial and you may forward this freely.

Re:  ABWIG - Channel update

I will be submitting the permit for the dredging of the 3 major channels, (North, Apollo Pass, Main and South,) next week.  The last time we dredged the channels was in 1995.  All the engineering is done.  I will have a copy at the meeting.

Everyone needs to be at East Bay HS at 6:30 on Monday to support ABWIG.  We going to ask the county for matching funds.

Apollo Beach Residents,

We (Canal Advisory Committee) were just informed last night that the South County meeting for citizens interested in canal dredging will be held this upcoming Monday, November 14th, East Bay High School, 6:30 PM.

The primary purpose is that the county wants your input on the location of dredging needs.

There will be a short presentation by the county, and a survey will be distributed.

The rest of the meeting will be informal, there will be large maps set up on easels Your household will be given 3 push pins. You can stick these in the map of your area at locations where you think dredging is needed.

Our email list is limited, so we ask you to forward this freely and help by informing neighbors who may not have email.
